The house is located at 168 Thompson Street in Springfield, Massachusetts, in one of the nicest parts of the McKnight Historic District. Built in the 20s by the owner of a cigar manufacturing company in nearby Holyoke for his growing family. The house has been owned by just three families since it was build and occupied the entire time. The McKnight as the district is locally known, is a planned development built by the McKnight brothers starting in 1867 and is the largest collection of Victorian homes in the country.
This gem was built at the end of the Victorian Era and reflects a reaction to the excesses of those flamboyant times. The elegant three-story home features formal dining and living room, a cozy sun room, a butler’s pantry with breakfast nook, and a spacious kitchen on the ground floor. Enter through the sheltered front door into the vestibule, sit on the built-in storage benches to remove your boots and put on slippers. Going through the glass paneled inner door into the spacious entry with an elegant though simple staircase leading to the second floor. On the second floor you will find a full bath serving the 2 bedrooms that don’t have en suite baths. The master bedroom has a bath with large tiled shower, toilet and wash basin. All these rooms have closets; the central bath is served by a build-in for linen and sundries, three deep shelves behind paneled doors above and three ample drawers below. We are using this as a library and study.

The home is heated by a natural gas-fired steam boiler that was installed in 2002, during the installation of the new boiler we had the asbestos insulation removed and replaced with modern fiberglass insulation. The work was performed by licenced professionals and the result certified to be well within the states requirements for airborne asbestos.
